Foo Fighters Play 'Last Show For A Long Time,' Closing Reading ... - Huffington Post

Eighteen years ago in Seattle, Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl decided to form a new band after the death of singer Kurt Cobain. Today, the Foo Fighters are regarded as one of the greatest (and one of the most seismologically intense) rock bands of the new millennium.

But on Sunday, Grohl told the crowd at the 2012 Reading Festival that the performance marked the Foo Fighters' "last show for a long time."

"Well, well, well. The f--king Reading festival. You guys [realize] we've got a lot of songs to play. It's the last show of the tour and it's the last show for a long time," Grohl said, according to NME.

He went on to dedicate "These Days" to former Nirvana bandmates, Cobain and Krist Novoselic, telling the audience, "I'd like to dedicate this song to a couple of people who couldn't be here tonight. This one's for Krist and this one's for Kurt.''

The Foo Fighters' frontman might have been in a particularly nostalgic mood, since Sunday marked the 20-year anniversary of Nirvana's headlining performance at the Reading Festival in 1992, according to LoudWire. It was the last show the band ever played in England.

Novoselic wrote a piece for Seattle Weekly back in 2009, before the release of "Nirvana: Live at Reading."

"I think the show was such a success because of the audience," Novoselic wrote about the 1992 performance. "They gave so much that it was easy to swat it back. The best moment is the crowd sing-a-long to 'Lithium.'"

Grohl channeled the crowd's energy on Sunday when he got the audience to sing "Happy Birthday" to his mother, according to NME. "In 1992 when Nirvana played here, the last show we ever played in England, you sang happy birthday to my mom. Here's your chance," he said. The crowd responded.

Despite Grohl saying that Reading marked the Foo Fighters' "last show," the band has some dates lined up next month, CBS News notes. They are set to appear at Rock the Vote in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5, as well as at the Music Midtown Festival in Atlanta on Sept. 21 and the DeLuna Fest in Pensacola Beach, Fla, on Sept. 22.

Rockers Foo Fighters made the last night of the Reading Festival in England one to remember by playing a mammoth 26-song set and singing happy birthday to Dave Grohl's mum.

The band brought the three-day music event to an end on Sunday night after headlining at the festival's sister site in Leeds, England on Friday.

Ploughing through 26 tracks over two-and-a-half hours, Grohl announced that the performance would be the band's last for the near future.

He told revellers, "You guys realise we've got a lot of songs to play. It's the last show of the tour and it's the last show for a long time.''

The rocker also took time to remember his former Nirvana bandmates, the late Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic, by dedicating his Three Days song to them.

He added, "I'd like to dedicate this song to a couple of people who couldn't be here tonight. This one's for Krist and this one's for Kurt.''

Grohl then remembered when Nirvana played the festival 20 years earlier and how the crowd sang happy birthday to his mother - and brought her out onstage to relive the moment.

He said, "In 1992 when Nirvana played here, the last show we ever played in England, you sang happy birthday to my mom. Here's your chance."

Meanwhile, over in Leeds...

Rap group Odd Future continued to court controversy with their performance at Leeds Festival on Sunday by attacking a blow-up sex doll on stage.

The hip-hop collective, who are famous for their shocking lyrics and gigs, stunned fans at the music event in England by bringing out a blow-up doll, which was bound and gagged.

They then kicked the item off the stage, before bandmember Jasper Dolphin stamped on its head.

Frontman Tyler, The Creator told the crowd, "You body slammed that b**ch. Is she OK?", adding, "S**t I just killed Kimberly."

The antics followed their set at Leeds' sister festival in Reading, where the band got in an altercation with security staff after they tried to go out into the crowd.
